Fingerprint Sensor Annoyance?

Is there a magic trick to the finger print sensor? Seems like a good 60% of the time, I still have to enter my passcode to get into the phone...

I have deleted an reregistered my finger, and even made additional entries of my thumb at other angles just in case...
