The last Motorola flagship to be launched in India was the Moto Z in October 2016. Since then, the company has released upper mid-range smartphones such as the Moto Z2 Play, lower mid-range phones such as the Moto G5 Plus and the Moto G5S Plus, and entry-level smartphones such as the Moto E4 Plus. However, even though the Moto Z2 Force was announced as the company's new flagship smartphone in July, Motorola didn't bring it to India.
That changes now, six months after the phone's release in the U.S. (through carriers) in August. Although Motorola has been known to delay international launches of flagship phones, a delay of six months to bring the phone to India is unprecedented. It is disappointing that India was ignored as a flagship smartphone market by Motorola up until now, while competitors such as Samsung and OnePlus experience considerable success in the premium smartphone market.
Now, the Lenovo-owned company has sent media invites to publications for the launch event of the Moto Z2 Force. According to NDTV Gadgets, the invite confirms that Motorola will launch the smartphone bundled with the Moto TurboPower Pack Mod. The Moto TurboPower Pack Mod (which has a 3500mAh battery and supports 15W fast charging) was launched in India in December for Rs. 5999 ($93). The company will host the launch event live on YouTube at 12PM on February 15 (a day after Xiaomi India launches a new Redmi smartphone).
Motorola did not specify any details about the pricing and availability of the Moto Z2 Force in India. In the US, the phone was launched for $800, which converts to around Rs. 51,400. It may be that the company would launch the phone in India at a similar price, but in our view, that would be a bad idea as it has been six months since the phone's release in the US.
The Moto Z2 Force is the company's 2017 flagship smartphone with specifications including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, 4GB/6GB of RAM, 64GB/128GB of storage expandable with a microSD card slot, and a 5.5-inch QHD (2560×1440) 16:9 aspect ratio "ShatterShield" display. It has a dual camera setup with dual 12MP RGB + monochrome Sony IMX386 sensors, with an f/2.0 aperture, PDAF, laser autofocus, and a dual-LED flash. There is a 5MP front camera with an f/2.2 aperture, 85-degree wide-angle lens, and an LED flash.
The phone is powered by a 2730mAh battery with fast charging support. It has the usual connectivity options including Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, and a USB Type-C port, but it does not have a 3.5mm headphone jack, which may have an impact on its popularity in the Indian smartphone market.
The Moto Z2 Force measures 155.8 x 76 x 6.1mm, and weighs 143 grams. It's made of a 7000 series aluminium unibody, with a water-repellent nano-coating and pin connectors for Moto Mods. We have already done a mini-review of the phone, and expect to learn more about its pricing and availability in India soon.
Update 1: Officially Launched
At a price tag of Rs. 34,999, the phone competes with several affordable flagships in India, such as the OnePlus 5T, the Honor View 10, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, and the Nokia 8. Its major differentiating features are the "ShatterShield" display and the Moto Mod ecosystem (as well as the fact that the TurboPower Pack is being bundled with it). However, it does have some downsides. Its 5.5-inch 16:9 aspect ratio display has less surface area than the 6-inch 18:9 displays of the OnePlus 5T, the Honor View 10, and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. The battery capacity without the power pack is on the lower side at 2,730mAh, but the most major omission here is the lack of the 3.5mm headphone jack.
Overall, it can be recommended for users wanting a durable "ShatterShield" display (although it must be kept in mind that users have found that the "ShatterShield" display scratches easily, so a screen protector is recommended).
